TOP TEN SITKA FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS  |  [Back to Home]

1. What is Sitka's elevation?

Depends on where you are standing (or what you are standing on), where the tide is and whether or not there's a full moon. Actually, for simplicity's sake, let's just say the answer to this one is:
SEA LEVEL!

2. Can we use American money?

Yes. We gladly accept the bank notes and coinage backed by the full weight and authority of the United States Treasury. That's because we were the 49th state admitted to the Union.

3. Can we use American stamps? Do you get mail up here? How often does it arrive?

Yes. Yes. Every day (weather permitting).

4. We hear it rains a lot. What do you do when it rains?

Everything we do when it doesn't rain.

5. In some communities they tell us everyone leaves when the tourist season ends. Does everyone leave Sitka?

Well, some folks leave, go to Hawaii, Arizona, Mexico. But most of stay because we have to watch over our bears while they hibernate.

6. How are the winters here?

The Upper Midwest, New England, central states, Wyoming, Montana, North and South Dakota (why don't they just get it over with, merge and form one nice, polite place, the State of Dakota?) all have nastier winters than we ever will this side of completed global warming.

7. How long does it take to drive to Juneau?

5 minutes to get your car on the ferry and then 4 to 12 hours depending on which ferry you are riding. We live on an island that is, believe it or not, completely surrounded by water.
